RIGHT OF THE DAY: Protection From Voter Intimidation

YOUR RIGHT OF THE DAY: You have the right to protection against people who attempt to intimidate you in your efforts to vote or to register to vote. 1U.S. Code, Title 18, Section 245

Don’t like your member of Congress? Don’t complain, vote! (OK you can vote AND complain).

If you haven’t yet been bombarded by hundreds of campaign ads, you may not know that there is an election coming up. On November 4, you will have the opportunity to vote for the people you want to hold various elected positions within your federal, state, and possibly local government.

The positions you will be voting on vary depending on where you live, but one position is sure to be on the ballot for everyone: member of the House of Representatives. To refresh your memory from civics class, Congress is made up of the House of Representatives, who are elected every 2 years, and the Senate, who are elected for staggered 6-year terms. 36 states will be voting on a Senate seat this year.

Many areas are also voting on state and local government, and even propositions. You can check who and what you will be voting on at BallotPedia.org.

Before you do any of this, be sure you are registered to vote! Rockthevote.com

And if you find yourself being intimidated in any way related to voting, contact the U.S. Department of Justice.
